Kawaii Cloud Princess - Postmortem

Oh man, what a week! I can't imagine doing a shorter game jam.
I'm really happy with how the game turned out. I'm also so glad to be done with this. It was rough finding time to work on it between work and other things.

Things started to get really sloppy as Friday and Saturday rolled around! But I did get to learn some things, which was the goal. I was able to get familiar with Godot's particle effects and sound effects. I got to play with theme layouts. I feel like I finally broke free from tutorial hell in Godot. I also got to make pixel art icons.

I had a lot of stuff I cut just to get this done in time. Things that I wanted to get in but couldn't:

  • Different bad guys
  • Bad guys that were immune to one of the attacks, like umbrella enemies would be immune to rain, shield enemies would be immune to lasers, etc.
  • Different levels.
  • A boss.
  • I wanted different attacks, like blood rain, hail, and tornadoes.
  • Death animations for villagers and demons.
  • More sound effects and adding more voices. We recorded a bunch of stuff for the demons and the Cloud Princess, but I just ran out of time and couldn't add them. (I wanted to add an "Unhinged" option to select after winning at least once because my wife kept recording voiceovers about drugs and cussing that were pretty funny, but they didn't align with the theme of the game.)
  • Different looks to change into. (I did get one in! :D)
  • More balancing.
  • All the polishing! :p
  • Birds that fly around and land in the trees.

Here are my original Ideas for the game that got thrown out as time went on:

  • Play as a god that the villagers created on accident.
  • You needed to have villagers pray to you and collect dead demons then burn them as a sacrifice, to give you power.
  • You would need to unlock skills between rounds.
  • You would need to have X amount of prayer or sacrifice power to use an attack, or you would lose it.
  • I wanted to have a 3d environment and use 2d sprites for the demons, villagers, and player.

But those things were way too ambitious for just me :D I'm happy with where the game ended up though. I think it's cute.

I'm probably done with this project unless some artists I know are interested in working on it. I'm happy with it being a snapshot of my current skill level and I hope that I'll get to compare it to things I do in the future to see how much I'll have grown.

Thanks for reading!
